Corona Virus and SDGs: Where Do We Stand Now?

In 2015, the United Nations came together and agreed to shared efforts to achieve sustainable development through the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This agenda consisted of 17 Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs, which set out quantitative objectives across each of the elements of sustainable development (Economic, Environmental & Social); all to be achieved by 2030. The SDGs were designed to take on the most urgent global challenges of our generation, calling upon countries around the world to collaborate.

At the end of 2019, after four years, some countries were doing fairly well with regards to achieving their targets, namely Scandinavia. The UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network created an index to monitor progress by country.

Well now we’re waist deep into 2020 and it’s been an interesting year so far to say the least. There are daily news articles reporting that Corona Virus is set to cause the largest ever fall in C02 emissions. More so than the 2008 recession, Spanish Flu and the two World Wars.
